Colombia plans to install between one gigawatt (GW) and 3GW of electrolysis capacity to produce green hydrogen by 2030, according to the country’s hydrogen roadmap published on September 30

As part of the first stage of the 30-year plan, three hydrogen pilots will operate in Colombia by mid-2022, according to mines and energy minister Diego Mesa.

“There will be at least three initial pilots that we want to be operating by the end of president Ivan Duque’s term [next August],” Mr Mesa said in an interview on Colombian media on October 2. “The first will be from the electrolyser that [state oil company] Ecopetrol has acquired to produce green hydrogen at the Reficar refinery in Cartagena. And we also have another two sustainable mobility pilots, for light vehicles and public transport," he added.

The hydrogen roadmap aims to mobilise investment of between $2.5bn and $5.5bn, primarily originating from the private sector. If successfully achieved, it is estimated that between 7000 and 15,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created.
